The Sicilian Baroque
A tour through three Sicilian baroque cities: Ragusa, Modica and Scicli.
Ragusa is a city of ancient origins, devastated by the earthquake of 1693 and subsequently rebuilt in two different sites. In fact Ragusa can be considered as the city of two souls: the superior part, dominated by San Giovanni Cathedral, has got all the features of a modern state capital and, among its uphill roads, many noble buildings and craft stores appear; lower, nestled in the hill, there is the small jewel of Ibla, the ancient area of Ragusa, that is a fine example of Baroque and UNESCO heritage.
Walking along its streets means to be fascinated by the Baroque buildings, such as the “Circolo di Conversazione”, by the San Giorgio Cathedral that rises grandiosely at the main square and, at last, to the beautiful Iblei Gardens to enjoy the wonderful landscape that the soft mountainous curves present.
Few minutes from Ragusa there is Modica, a UNESCO heritage site too. Known as the “city of one hundred churches”, it is heaped with beauty and Sicilian charm, It is a small town to be discovered; among its alleys, staircases and hidden corners. Saint Giorgio Cathedral, Saint Pietro Church and Saint Nicolò Inferiore are particularly interesting. But there is an element that, more than others, it is remembered for: the chocolate. It will be inevitable to be charmed by the excellence of Modican chocolate. Born and created following ancient tradition that, still today, is handed down to future generations.
Scicli, famous as one of the places used as a set to tv series “Il commisario Montalbano” and of the film “Italo”, hides a surreal atmosphere, almost bohemian, among its streets that mix the Baroque, with beautiful little shops and little art galleries. Its historic centre is also included in the list of human heritage places, but the focus of the city is Mormini Penna Street, the police station set of the famous fiction, along which you can admire the Spadaro Palace and the City Hall, and also Saint Giovanni, Saint Teresa and Saint Michele Churches.
